Food Review: Little Sky Lavender Brownies Kit

Oh me! Oh my! I’m in lavender heaven! …And chocolate heaven too! Wow!  Who knew that culinary lavender was so awesome?

I have never before tasted culinary lavender in a product. My exposure to lavender has been through the use of essential oils in a diffuser in our home, or through dried lavender used for sachets, but never have I cooked with lavender.  I must say that today that declaration has changed, and I have now had my eyes opened to the wonderful, delightful world of culinary lavender thanks to Laurie Maze of  ”Little Sky Lavender Farm” in Boulder Creek, California. Laurie had told me that once I tried lavender in cooking that I’d be hooked…(and hey Laurie! You were right!)

It all started this afternoon when I opened a large package of “Little Sky Lavender Brownie Kit mix.” Let me tell you this is no rinky dink package of brownie mix either, folks. This is a large package of mix that makes a family size batch of brownies… but what drew me in when I opened that package was the amazingly wonderful smell of lavender. My entire kitchen smelled so wonderful! I stood over the mixing bowl just breathing in the calming aroma and imagining what it would be like to be standing in a field of lavender. Then I did it… yep, I sure did… after mixing the melted chocolate chips into the dry ingredients I could not resist. I dipped my finger into the batter. Oh wow! Yummy in my tummy! The taste of lavender was amazing.

The brownies are in the oven as I type this and my whole house smells so good. I have a few minutes before the beeper on the oven sounds and I will tell you how good these brownies taste.

I’m going to go sneak a peek at them in the oven right now… hold on to your horses and I’ll be right back folks.

***Update ten minutes later: Yum! Rich chocolate with floral notes. My taste buds I will admit are getting used to this, but they like it. I think these would be good for an afternoon tea party on the lawn. I can imagine a table set with fancy china teacups, a large plate of lavender brownies and little sandwiches being served, and little bundles of lavender tied with ribbon as table decor.
